| COUNTER TERRORIST SEARCH The effects of the bombing of the Grand Hotel in Brighton, UK in October, 1984 were far-reaching in terms of the subsequent approach taken to counter-terrorist search by the police and military in the UK. Despite the escalating problem of Irish terrorism and the consequential build-up of search requirements throughout the 1970's, the Grand Hotel bombing was the catalyst which brought about a major change in training, planning and search operations. The combination of both police and military expertise in the formation of the Counter-Terrorist Search Wing in 1985 was instrumental in achieving the success in this discipline since realised by the two organisations in the UK. Now called the National Search Centre, this establishment has continued to improve standards and expertise in this field. The importance of search in the constant battle against terrorism cannot be underestimated, as in addition to potentially locating IEDs, overt, systematic search activity also acts as a deterrent which need not be undertaken just by the police and military but also by progressive, trained security organisations.
